Heat stroke is a common problem among pets during the summer months. These dogs are at a greater risk:  

- Short nosed (brachycephalic) breeds 

- Obese dogs 

- Long haired dogs 

- Dogs with laryngeal paralysis 

 

 

Signs and Symptoms of Heatstroke in Dogs:  

- Panting 

- Difficulty breathing 

- Bright red tongue 

- Drooling 

- Vomiting 

- Diarrhea 

- Lethargy 

- Racing heart 

- Collapse or weakness 

 

 

Dog Heatstroke First Aid and Treatment:  

- Get to a cooler place 

- Give small amounts of water often 

- Place cool wet towels around the feet and head 

- Spray with tepid (not ice-cold) water 

- Get to the nearest vet ASAP 

 

 

How To Prevent Heatstroke in Dogs 

- Do not exercise during the hottest part of the day 

- NEVER leave your pet in the car 

- Always make sure to bring water for your dog 

- Gradually increase your dog's exercise over time
