Leptospirosis – Is there a risk of transmission?

Is there a risk of transmission to humans and other pets from infected dogs?

Yes, there is a risk.  The leptospirosis bacterium is cleared from the blood within 24 hours, but it can take a week to clear it from the urine.  Dogs can also become carriers, and are capable of spreading the bacteria to other pets and humans.

Are beaches and oceans safer than streams and ponds?

Yes, beaches and the ocean are considered safe.  The biggest concern is stagnant waterways and puddles.

Any other advice?

I recommend monitoring your dog’s closely during this time of year.  If you are at all concerned, it is never wrong to bring your dog to your veterinarian.  Always wash your hands after petting your dog, and use gloves to clean up urine.
