How can Leptospirosis be prevented?
How can dog owners prevent this kind of disease?
Vaccination plays a major role in prevention, but only covers certain strains (2 or 4 - gryppo, canicola, ictero and Pomona or just ictero and canicola). Keeping your pet away from stagnant water will help as well.
Is it a MUST to have your dog vaccinated?
Would you say it is 100% safe after vaccination?
If your dog lives in an urban environment and/or goes hiking with you, I would highly recommend the leptospirosis vaccine. While it doesn’t cover every strain, it does cover a lot of the most common ones. Unfortunately, though, no vaccine is perfect, and the leptospirosis is no exception.
From your experience with this type of injection, what are pros and cons?
Historically, the leptospirosis vaccine was associated with a high number of vaccine reactions. However, the safety of the vaccine has improved in recent years. In my opinion, the pros far outweigh the cons.
